Hardwood and cypress posts are generally similar in price, but at Crawfords Fencing, our preferred choice for standard timber paling fences is quality hardwood.

Cypress Fence Posts — Why We Are Selective
Cypress posts became increasingly popular in the early 2000s, replacing many traditional hardwood applications.
One reason for this was availability. Cypress trees grow much faster than many hardwood species, making the product more readily available and historically a more economical option.
Cypress also has some excellent natural qualities:

However, after many years of installing and repairing fences across Melbourne, Crawfords Fencing has become selective about where we recommend cypress posts.
Why We Don’t Recommend Cypress on Most Jobs
The main concern with cypress is not its ability to resist termites or perform well in-ground — it is the structural consistency of the timber.
When installing a timber paling fence, the posts are checked out to allow the rails to fit into the post correctly.
On a standard fence post, this process removes approximately 50mm of timber, leaving around 75mm of remaining timber strength in that section of the post.
If that remaining 75mm contains multiple natural knots throughout the timber, it can create potential weak points in the post structure.

Wind movement and stress on the fence
can increase the risk of cracking or splitting over time.
At Crawfords Fencing, we see the results in real-world conditions. After windy periods across Melbourne, we regularly attend fence repairs where cypress posts have failed around these weaker sections.
This is why we are selective with cypress posts and generally would not recommend them for most standard residential fencing projects.
We believe hardwood provides a more consistent structural product for the majority of timber paling fences, while steel posts remain the premium option where maximum strength or challenging ground conditions are a priority.
Cypress still has its place, particularly where termite resistance is a major concern, but we believe it should be selected based on the property requirements rather than used as the default choice.

While timber posts are a great option, installation quality makes a huge difference.
