One of the most common questions we receive is:

“If it’s galvanised, will it ever rust?”

The honest answer is:

Yes—but galvanising dramatically slows the process.

Galvanised steel is protected by a coating of zinc. Rather than allowing the underlying steel to rust immediately, the zinc coating acts as a protective barrier and also provides sacrificial protection if the coating is scratched or damaged.

This is one of the reasons galvanised steel is widely used in fencing, retaining walls and structural construction throughout Australia.

Why Doesn’t It Rust Straight Away?

Unlike bare steel, galvanised steel has a zinc coating bonded to its surface.

The zinc protects the steel from moisture and oxygen—the two ingredients needed for rust to form.

Even if the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc can continue to protect the exposed steel to some extent, depending on the size and severity of the damage.

Will It Eventually Rust?

Yes.

No protective coating lasts forever.

The lifespan of galvanised steel depends on factors such as:

  • Distance from the ocean.

  • Industrial pollution.

  • Moisture.

  • Soil conditions.

  • Whether it’s installed above or below ground.

  • Damage to the protective coating.

In most suburban environments, quality galvanised steel can provide many years of service before significant corrosion becomes an issue.
